Introduction to Cyprus
Introduction to Cyprus

Cyprus is situated in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, and is the third largest island after Sicily and Sardinia. Only 4 ½ hours flight from the UK, it could be considered almost a home from home. For eighty years the island was under British rule and this definitely left its mark. For example, driving on the left hand side, the majority of people speak English and so on.

Most famously known as the birthplace of the legendary Aphrodite, goddess of love, Cyprus is ideal for romantics with its fairy tale castles, numerous monasteries and ancient ruins.

Enjoy the Mediterranean climate which also graces Cyprus with 300 days of sunshine a year. Choose how best to spend your days, either basking in the sun on one of the many beaches, or make your way into the mountains and take in the breathtaking scenery of the Troodos or Akamas.

The possibilities are endless! So why not sit back, relax, and let us help you to make the most of your time here on this magical island.

When to go

Cyprus is a year round destination. The main tourist season begins in April and goes through until October, peaking in July and August when the temperatures are at their highest. However, the winter season, December to February, is also a nice time to visit. A little cooler, but it is still possible to enjoy a walk along the coast or go skiing in the Troodos Mountains.

Flavours of Cyprus
]
Cyprus is an island full of natural beauty and steeped with history. Discover the many different cultures that have influenced the island over the years and made it what it is today. This includes influences from Greece, Turkey, America, Lebanon, Syria, Italy, France and, as mentioned previously, Britain. With them they also brought their recipes and these have been introduced into Cypriot cooking. A combination of all these foreign flavours and locally grown produce has lead to Cyprus' own traditional cuisine.

The Cypriot diet is very healthy, they use little oil and everything is cooked fresh, daily and to a high standard. Salads and fruits are amazing, and at some stage it is a must to try a meze, a popular tradition in Cyprus, where you will be served anything up to 30 dishes! This is the best way to discover the true flavours of Cyprus.

What to Drink

The Cypriots drink a lot of coffee, usually made from fresh coffee beans, finely ground. Cyprus coffee is know for being very strong and is usually served with a glass of water.
Wine, sherry and brandy are locally produced in Cyprus, and it is possible to find up to forty different varieties. The majority are of a high standard and reasonably priced. The sweet commandaria is particularly nice.
